Last night was our church’s annual Valentine’s banquet talent show. For the first time, my daughter and I sang a duet together.

Before we left, I went into the bathroom to get ready. I didn’t go “all out,” but did decide, for once, to not just wear my hair in a ponytail.
As I did my hair and put on makeup, my four-year-old son sat on the bed, watching me.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
“Straightening my hair,” I told him.
“Why?”
“So I look pretty.”
“Why do you want to look pretty?”
“Because Jordan and I are singing tonight and getting up in front of everyone.”
“So you want to look pretty tonight?”
“Yes,” I told him. “Sometimes I just want to look pretty.”
He paused for a moment, as if taking this in.
Finally, he said, “And the rest of the time, you don’t want to look pretty?”
Sigh.
Apparently not.
because I said I would . . .

I started some other post today, but it just didn’t go anywhere. So then I
thought about taking Sundays off from my Lenten obligation observance.
