Chocolate Candy Website

Dec 28, 2010

Oh My Gosh.  Have you ever had Sees Candies?  I was introduced to them about 10 years ago when I moved to Austin.  I don't know why I hadn't heard of them before . . . but, growing up on the east coast, I hadn't.

Anyway, I usually buy them (and get samples of their chocolate) at the mall.  It is YUMMY!  Of course, I am a chocolate fanatic . . . I love any and all types.  But, I have to say, Sees is one of my favorites.
If you have never tried them, I (and most people I know) would really recommend them.  You can look to see if they have a kiosk at your local mall, or you can order online at their website.  (Valentine's Day is just around the corner!)  I bet you'll enjoy the yummy goodness as much as I do!

My Facebook Diary

Dec 22, 2010

Last year, I did two blog posts about how I was able to retrieve all of my Facebook statuses and cut and paste them into Word (click here for the first post).  I feel like my statuses do a really good job of documenting my entire year - thus, it was as if I had kept a "diary" - of sorts.  I love that idea!

Last year, I used an application called "My Year in Status."  A few days ago, I went back to that site to do what I had done last year - pull up all my statuses and cut and paste them. I was sorely disappointed by what I found.

First of all, not all of my statuses were available - most of January and February (except 3 statuses) were missing.

Secondly, I could not longer "copy" my statuses.  It just wouldn't allow me to do it.  Since I have hundreds, if not thousands, of statuses, I certainly was not about to retype them all - thus, I had to find another program.

And, I did that.  The new application is called "Archivedbook."  Not only did they seem to have ALL my statuses, they also had my statuses from the last six months of 2009 (in case you didn't get them last year).

I was able to copy them and paste them into Word - they took up 141 pages!  YIKES!!  I had a lot to say this year!

I hope you all enjoy saving your statuses and making your own diary of 2010.  I know I'll be glad to have it for years to come

Car Connection Website

If you're in the market for a new car, you'll want to check out the Car Connection website before you make that big purchase!  They are a great resource on all cars.  They review all the cars out there - giving not only expert reviews, but also user reviews.

For example, if you were looking to buy a Buick Lucerne, they would tell you their overall rating of that vehicle is a 7 out of 10.  They also have 4 expert reviews up on that vehicle and they have links to where you can go to do some more research on that vehicle.

If you research the Hyndai Accent or the VW Gti, you'll find not only reviews, but also photos of the car.  They also link you to the official site for those vehicles.

I don't know about you, but I always want to do my research before I make a large purchase and when I say "research" - I mean getting more info from a variety of sources!

Bring Back the VCR!

Dec 14, 2010

I am looking for the person out there who can explain to me how we have the technology to put a man on the moon and allow me to “chat” online with a friend who is simultaneously flying on an airplane and yet, no one has come up with a DVD that does not SCRATCH!!!
What’s up with that?

Do the creators and distributors of DVDs not have children?

Do they not know what a child is capable of DOING to a DVD in a nano-second?

Our cabinet is full of DVDs – all which we (or someone we know) spent $15-$20 on and none of them work! And, rarely do I get a movie from our local Redbox or Blockbuster Express that doesn’t have a few skips of its own, too.

Do you know how frustrating it is (and, I’m guessing most of you do) to put in a DVD for your kids, only to have them tell you 10 minutes into it, “Mom! It’s skipping” or “Mommy! It’s not playing!” GRRRR!!!

That is why I am going back to good, ol’ VHS tapes.

Yes, I said it. I’m out of date. I’m out of style. But, I am also out of patience.

Lately, I have been shopping at Goodwill a lot – and you know why? Not because I think they have great deals (to be honest with you, I think Goodwill is too expensive –but that’s a whole other blog post). No, it’s because they sell VHS tapes for FIFTY CENTS!!! I can’t rent a DVD at Redbox for that. AND, I can keep the VHS tape forever and ever. AND, that VHS tape will probably outlive me! Those things are hard to break!

I have found some great VHS movies for the kids – ones we didn’t yet own, such as Toy Story and ones we did, like Annie, which came in DVD form and is thus useless to us now.

A man in front of me in line today at Goodwill looked at the VHS tapes I had in my hand and said, “Do you really still own a VCR?”

“Yes,” I told him. “I do – and I will never, ever get rid of it!”

That is, until someone (is anyone listening out there?) finds a way to make DVDs scratch-proof!

Family Photo: And All My Kids Smiled at the Same Time

Creating our family Christmas photo cards, and writing the annual letter that goes along with them, is one of my favorite activites of the holiday season!

Unfortunately, TAKING the family photo is generally not the fun part.  I have three children, with the youngest two being two and four years old.  Getting all three kids to smile simultaneously, while looking at the camera, is nothing short of a miracle.

If I end up with one family photo where no one is crying or squirming out of grasp, I am a happy woman!

This year, though, we really lucked out!  I not only got one GREAT family shot, but THREE - yes, count them, THREE - additional, fantastic photos of ALL three kids together!

So, what do I do???  How do I choose which card makes the "cut?"

Decisions, decisions . . . I have lost sleep over this!  And then, I realized, I can use ALL FOUR photos!

I quickly visited Shutterfly's website and reviewed their holiday cards and various options.  I loved almost all of them, but I think I have found one that will suit my needs.

I'm posting a photo of my favorite card design - though this is not my family in those photos - I still need to order my cards.

I can't wait to get my Christmas cards mailed to me an have them shipped out - hopefully, this year, BEFORE Christmas!

Weight Loss Website Review

Dec 1, 2010

It seems that I am constantly seeing commercials on TV or hearing ads on the radio for weight loss pills.  Don't you ever wonder if they work or are just scams?  I know, I do.  I recently came across a website that might help you distinguish between the various products on the market and learn more about each one.

The site is called Shop Best Diets and they explain to you how weight loss pills work and which are the best weight loss pills on the market.  In addition, they have a team of weight loss experts who details various diet plans, healthy meals and tips for losing weight.

If you are considering making weight loss your News Year's resolution (again) this year, you might want to check out their site.  It's always better to begin a new task (especially one as daunting as losing those extra pounds!) with knowledge on your side!

NARS Cosmetics Website

I love makeup - but probably don't wear it enough.  I am always, though, up for trying new products and new lines.

I discovered a website called NARS cosmetics which sells a variety of makeup online - from lipstick and foundation to brushes and makeup removers.

I was looking through the lip gloss and lip laquer products and they have some great, bright colors - perfect for the holidays!  In addition, I noticed that many of their lipsticks are "exceedingly longwearing." Now, that is just what I need.  I can't STAND when my lipstick comes off 30 minutes after I apply it!  Who has time, with three kids, to constantly reapply lipstick!?

I also saw a big section on their website for gifts - perfect since Christmas is just around the corner.  They have a wide selection of gifts, separated by gifts under $50 and ones above $50.  Every woman always needs more makeup, right?
If you're in the mood for some new makeup shades or products, or even some holiday gifts, check them out.

Butcher Block, Stainless Steel and Adirondack Chairs Websites

I have a myriad of tastes when it comes to decorating a home.

When I attended college in rural Pennsylvania, I developed and affinity for butcher block tables and counters.  Maybe it was the Amish influence of the area, but I have always admired a kitchen done in that style.   I was pleased to find the Butcher Block Co. website which sells so many of these products that I enjoy.

Other pieces of furniture I'd really love to have in my home are adirondack chairs.  My best friend has two on her front porch and I love to visit her and sit in them, hot cup of coffee in my hand, as we watch the kids play in front of her house.  Adirondack Chairs, Inc. has a great selection of those.

I have another friend who did her kitchen all in stainless steel - like a commerical kitchen - equipped with even a utility sink. It looks fabulous!  If you're interested in going down that road in your own home, check out the Stainless Steel Sink Store.

No matter what your decorating style, there are companies out there designed to suit your needs!

Popcorn and Raisins

Nov 16, 2010

My kids always make a complete mess of my car.  Usually, the mess involves food - snacks I have provided for them.  My husband is constantly saying that I shouldn't let them eat in the car, but of course, he doesn't drive with all three of them, for an hour, in rush hour traffic to get them home from school at night.  Food spilled in the car is the least of my worries.  At least, with a snack in their mouth, they have a harder time screaming at the top of their lungs.  The food, though, does nothing to stop foreign objects from being thrown close to my head.

Yesterday, on one of those snack-filled car trips, my four year old spilled his popcorn all over the backseat and the floor.  I told him he'd better clean it up.  He threw a fit.  I stood my ground and ultimately, his sister ended up assisting him by leaning over from her seat to help him get the pieces that were out of his reach.

By the time we got to a stop light, the kids were done cleaning.

"Mom," my 8-year-old daughter said to me.  "We picked up all the popcorn and we even found some raisins, too."

"Great," I said, with perhaps a little too much sarcasm in my voice because, clearly, my tone wasn't lost on my daughter.

"Mommy?" she asked.  "Why is it that sometimes, when you say 'great,' I feel like you're really saying, 'Oh, brother?'"

Teaching Your Kids about Money

Oct 5, 2010

For about a year now, I have struggled with the concept of giving our nearly-eight-year-old daughter, Jordan, an allowance. For awhile, she received a $1 a week – regardless of what chores she completed. Some weeks, I had her do a lot. Some weeks, I forgot to have her do any. Most weeks, I forgot to pay her. Ultimately, somewhere down the road, she came up to me and said that I owed her something like $16. Really? Maybe. I wasn’t sure. I hadn’t kept track. Clearly, my system was not working.

And, that stressed me out immeasurably because Rob and I are, as a couple, very concerned about not only saving money, but also teaching our children the value of money and hard work . . . how to earn it . . . save it . . . spend it wisely . . . and give it away.

I realized, though, that what I was doing wasn’t teaching her anything. I wasn’t demonstrating to my daughter that her “labor” directly affected how much she “earned” – and, since more than half the time, she wasn’t even getting paid, I certainly wasn’t teaching her how to manage the money she did make.

As I mentioned in a post last week, my husband and I are leading Dave Ramsey “Financial Peace University.” A lot of what Dave teaches is “old news” to me and Rob. We have been doing many of his strategies for years and that is why we felt secure in being able facilitate the class.

But, when we got to the lesson on teaching your children about money, my ears perked up. This lesson was one I, personally, needed to hear. Fortunately, Rob felt the same way about it and we quickly got on the same page – with each other and Dave.

So, I would like to share with you what Dave suggests and what we have done . . . and how it is working so far.

Dave Ramsey’s philosophy on children and money is that they should not earn an “allowance.” He feels “allowance” is too much like “welfare” – as was the case in our home, our daughter was getting her dollar, whether she had chores to do or not that week. Instead, Dave suggests your children earn “commissions”- specific amounts of money for particular tasks they complete.

Now, because our children are members of our family, there are certain chores they must do just because they live here –with no monetary compensation attached to them. For example, Jordan must fold and sort the laundry and carry everyone’s pile to their rooms. She also needs to water the plants and empty the dishwasher. Our four year old son has chores, too. He empties the silverware drawer from the dishwasher, cleans up the backyard toys and carries down the laundry from all the hampers to the laundry room. Our two year old (it’s never too early to start them!) helps me put the clothes in the washing machine, then into the dryer and eventually carries them to our couch, where Jordan will fold them.

There are other chores, however, from which they can earn “commission.” About two months ago, we bought a dry erase board and Rob hung it on the back door to our house. On the board is each child’s name and under it, the chores for that week. Next to each chore is the amount of money they can earn for completing that task. For our daughter, most of her chores earn a “commission” of 50 cents to a dollar. Our four-year-old earns about 25 cents a task. Our poor two-year-old isn’t earning any money yet!

What tasks do we put up there? Well, our daughter has recently cleaned out all of our kitchen cabinets and drawers – taking all the items out (as I sorted through everything to see if anything should be sold or thrown out) and then she used soap and water to scrub the inside of each cabinet and drawer and then neatly rearranged everything back in place. For that, she earned 25 cents a drawer and a dollar a cabinet. Last weekend, I had her do the same thing with my bathroom cabinets. Boy, were they a mess! I don’t think I’ve done that job in five years! Our four year old pulls weeds in the backyard with Daddy and helps carry buckets of dirt and mulch around.

On Sunday night, my husband sits down with the kids and the dry erase board to review what tasks they have completed - he calls that the family "business meeting." Those completed jobs determine how much money they earn each week. With our daughter, she usually has a chance to earn $5 a week. Some weeks she earns it, some weeks she doesn’t.

For arguments sake, though, let’s say she earns all $5. What’s next? We can’t just hand her five bucks and say, “Here you go!” If we did that, she’d blow it all on soda and candy!

So, instead, Rob went out and bought one of those small coupon accordion files. Inside, he labeled three of the files: Saving, spending, and tithe.

If she earns five dollars in a week, she is to put one dollar in her tithe folder. When we go to church, she puts it in the basket to give it to God (actually, in our church, she has a choice of which basket to put it in – either for the church, for the widows and orphans, for the sick, weak and poor or for missions – so she’s learning about giving to others by choice, too). Two of her dollars go into the spending folder and the other two go into the savings file.

Let’s talk about the savings folder. What is she supposed to be saving for? Well, even though she’s not quite eight, she is saving for a car! As Dave Ramsey suggested, we have told her that when she is of “age” to get her own car –we will not be buying one for her. However, if she saves her money from now until then, we will match what she saves and put that towards her first car. So, if she saves $1000, we’ll put in another thousand towards that car. If she saves $5000, we’ll match that amount.

Note: Dave suggests that you put an “up to” limit on this offer. If you don’t, your child could turn out to be the best saver in history and you may need to fork over $20,000 at the end!!

A woman in our class also gave us a great idea. She told us that she has implemented this same plan with her children regarding the car savings account. But, she was worried that once they were of driving age, she wouldn’t have the money to “match” their amount. Thus, as they save their money and put it in the bank, she puts the same amount in at that same time. So, if they deposit $30 into their account, she also puts $30 in their account right then. This way, she won’t need to come up with a huge amount of money that she doesn’t have –and break her promise to her children – when they are ready to buy their first car.

Along those same lines, she also mentioned that if her children ever want to pull money out of that account to, let’s say, buy a video game, she says, “Okay, you can do that, but if you pull out $15, then I’m pulling out my matching $15, too!” She says this usually stops them from pulling out their money because, though they might be willing to spend $15 or $30 at a time, they aren’t willing to lose double that amount from their bank account!

The whole point of this is that we don’t believe in having a car payment. Rob and I have never had one and we want to instill in our kids that it’s important to pay cash for their cars. What they save, starting now, will determine how nice (or clunky) a car they get when they are older.

That leaves us with the spending file. We have given Jordan some leeway here. She can spend that money on snacks or toys or whatever she likes. But, we have also encouraged her to “save” some of the “spending” money so she can buy bigger items in time – nicer toys or clothes, etc. She says she’s saving it to buy a cell phone. (We haven’t yet had the discussion of how a cell phone may cost $150, but you still have the monthly plan to worry about!) Still, she has a goal and she’s working towards it.

We don’t have quite as “sophisticated” a system for our four year old. He has a large, plastic bucket (one we cleaned out after the Costco cashews were all eaten.) His money just gets put in there. If he gets dollar bills, we crumble them up so they look like a lot of money floating in the bucket. Occasionally, Rob will take him to the store and let him buy a drink or candy with some of his money. He, too, takes some of it to church on Sundays to put in the basket. When he gets a little older, we’ll implement a system like we have for Jordan. For now, though, he knows he’s earning money and he can buy “stuff” with that money.

Will all we are doing work to make our children responsible financial adults in the future? We sure hope so! In the meantime, last week I had Jordan’s parent-teacher conference and her teachers told me she does very well on the “money” math units. I said, “Gosh! I would hope so with all the time we spend talking about it at home!”

I am also encouraged by the fact that, on one of the Dave Ramsey DVDs, his teenage daughter spoke about her financial upbringing. She said that, after spending years and years of earning commissions at home – and then, eventually, getting an after-school job – she had saved $8,000 for her car. Her parents matched that and so, at the age of 16, she was able to purchase a $16,000 car in cash – with money she earned! Even at her young age, she knew that was a fabulous feeling!

That’s the kind of feeling I want my kids to have when they grow up.

Our Financial Story

Sep 27, 2010

I have been a little "slack" on this blog lately.  There are a number of reasons for this, not the least being that my father-in-law is very ill and we have been consumed with those issues.  Besides that, however, life just gets in the way of things!  Some weeks I find lots of time to write blog posts and others . . . well . . .not so much.

Another thing that is absorbing a great deal of my time (and my husband's time) is that Rob and I are leading the Dave Ramsey "Financial Peace University" class at our church.  If you have never heard of Dave Ramsey or any of his courses, you need to check him out.  Click here for his website and to find a class near you.  His information and advice (if you follow it) can be literally life changing!

Even though Rob and I have been following these steps for years, we are both becoming remotivated in this class!  We realize we had gotten into a "rut" when it came to saving money - or perhaps not being as careful with our spending as we've been in the past.  This course is inspring us to once again make our finances - and, most importantly, communicating about them with each other - a priority.

As a result, over the next few weeks, I'd like to share on this blog some of the things we've learned or changed in our lives (and the lives of our kids) as a result of leading this class.

The first night of our class, Rob and I typed up a "testimony" to explain our experience, throughout the course of our marriage, with money, saving, spending, staying out of debt and investing.

Before I begin telling you the "new" things we are doing, I just wanted to share our "financial story" with you, so that you have an  understanding of where we are coming from  . . . and not just where we are going.  I don't tell you any of these things to "brag" about what we have done right, but rather, to inspire you that you CAN leave a debt-free life - and you don't have to make a fortune to achieve that!

Here it is:

Rob and I married Thanksgiving weekend of 1996. At the time, I was just finishing my graduate degree and Rob was a 2LT in the Army, stationed in KS. We managed to squeeze pre-marital counseling into the two or three trips I made to visit him in Kansas during our engagement. If how to deal with your family finances was a part of that counseling, though, I don’t remember it.

We went on a honeymoon and then, the day after we returned to NJ, we packed up our cars and drove to Manhattan, Kansas to begin our married life. We arrived at our new apartment on Thursday. On Saturday morning, I woke up with my new husband, anxious to spend our first married weekend together “playing house.” I had waited years for this first weekend. Boy, was I in for a surprise! Rob rolled over and told me that he, too, had big plans for our weekend. We were meeting with a financial planner at 10 AM!

Talk about taking the romance out of the day. And, it only got worse from there. Rob let the financial planner break the really “great” news to me. We were booked to spend the next FIVE HOURS with him! That meeting is a blur to me – charts, numbers, chopped up credit cards in a jar - those are the things that come to mind when I think of that day.

But, the concepts we took from that meeting have lasted us for the past 14 years. We were fortunate to begin our marriage with little debt (a $10,000 graduate school loan was the extent of it). That meeting, though, ensured that we never got ourselves into any more debt once the loan was paid off. We began by saving $50 a month (“paying ourselves first” with an automatic withdrawal out of our bank account into a money market account) – a fortune, it seemed, when I was unemployed and Rob was being paid a Lieutenant’s salary. And, as time went on, we made sure to acquire life insurance, fund our IRAs and 403Bs (what we had then instead of the typical 401Ks) and build a substantial emergency fund – and, of course, tithe 10% of our salary. God blesses those who are faithful. With each pay increase we received, (because, I eventually did get a job and Rob would be promoted over time) we made sure to stay at the same standard of living. Instead of buying more expensive items or “loosening the purse strings," we would use each increase in income to fund the next part of our financial plan.

We also used the “envelope system” – especially when it came to grocery shopping. Our first few years of marriage, we were only able to budget $150 a month for groceries. When that money was gone and out of our envelope, so were our meal options! We ate a lot of hotdogs and beans towards the end of each month – and dealt with a lot of teasing from the other soldiers, too. Rob has memories of “eyeing” the lunches of his fellow soldiers and asking them if they thought they were going to “finish that!”

When we wanted to buy a “larger” item, we saved for it and paid cash. We knew we’d need a refrigerator when we moved into our first home, so I drew a picture of a fridge with dollar amounts lined up on the outside of it – taping that drawing to our current fridge. As we saved money, I’d color in the drawing, showing our progress towards the purchase of our new appliance. Rob has “fond” memories of saving for two months before he could afford to buy our first garden hose. If we went on vacation, we saved for it in our “vacation fund” and paid cash. We never bought something if we didn’t have the money in the bank to pay for it.

We are about to enter our 15th year of marriage. All of the “baby steps” we started taking that first weekend of our marriage have paid off. We regularly fund our investments, rarely touch our emergency fund and believe that we will have financial security in our retirement. We have no credit card debt and have never had a car payment – we drive our cars into the ground! We own two pieces of ranch land in the hill country, equaling about 70 acres, and both are completely paid off. As for our house? We took out a 15-year mortgage on that and intend to have it paid off about the time our two year old starts elementary school.

Three years ago we had the privilege of being featured in a PBS documentary entitled “Retirement Revolution.” It was hosted by Paula Zahn and followed a number of American families, discussing how they are “planning,” or have “planned,” for retirement. We were the example of a young couple who are saving for our future. A camera crew flew into Austin and followed us around for a few days – even going to work with Rob. If you’d like to see a clip from the show, and read more about our story, this is the link:,2,4,5&vid=

We are super excited to be leading this class! There is no greater feeling than to go to bed at night and know that you are DEBT FREE!! God has blessed us with not only money, but the people he has placed in our lives, who have provided invaluable information and support to live a debt-free life.

Along with leading this class, however, we are also excited to be students in it! No one is perfect in their financial plan. We are looking forward to being “re-motivated” by Dave Ramsey (specifically, as we really begin to save for college for our three kids and teach them how to save for their own future!) – and all of you – as we plough through this experience together!

Redecorate Your House with ShopWiki

I have a friend who just moved into a big, new house and is at a loss for how to begin decorating it.  I suggested she check out the website, Shopwiki.    This website doesn't just give placement to products that have paid for advertising.  They list everything that is on sale on the internet.

The first room she wanted to tackle was her daughter's bedroom, getting new pillows and bed linens.  I suggested a new comforter, too.

The other big project was her home home office.  She was looking for a new desk lamp.  I told her that I found some great lamps and other home accessories on this site.

My husband has also been asking me to get him a new therapeutic pillow.  I know I'm going to check out Shopwiki for one of those before I buy it at a local store.

Check out the site.  You might be able to decorate your whole house for a lot less - just by touching a few keys on your keyboard.

FREE Online Foreign Language Lessons

My two youngest children attend a Spanish-immersion school.  My older daughter, Jordan, also attended there and for the past three years, since she's been in elementary school, we have had a Spanish-speaking high school student come over, about four hours a week, to speak to her in Spanish and make sure she, too, grows up bilingual.

And then there are me and my husband.

I took French in high school.  (That doesn't do me much good in TEXAS, but it did help me ask for the restroom when I went to France in college.)  My husband took German - so, unless we're ordering sauerkraut, his knowledge is pretty useless, too.

But, who has time to take Spanish lessons when you have three little children - not to mention, PAY FOR THEM!

I have a solution, though!!

It turns out, the BBC offeres FREE language lessons online!

You can take a FREE 12-week course in either Spanish, French, Italian or German!

They also offers other audio and video courses in the four languages.

And, from waht I hear, they can give you help in learning more exotic languages such as Chinese, Russian and Greek.

Sign me up!!  Pretty soon, I may be able to do more in Spanish then just ordered my enchilados and tacos! :-)

Click here for the website of lessons.

A Bad Dream and a Plan

Aug 30, 2010

About a month ago, I had a really bad dream. I dreamt that I was driving in our minivan with my grandmother, Mimi, (who actually passed away years ago) and my two-year-old son, who was in the very back row.
For some reason, our car plunged into a body water and immediately, it was clear the car was about to go under.

What do I do? I looked at my elderly grandmother, and then back at my baby. How do I save them both?

I did what I thought was the best plan. I told my grandmother that she wouldn’t be able to get the car door open until the car was fully submerged. Once it was, to push it open and swim towards the sky. I had to get my baby out of his carseat.
It was at that moment I woke up. Breathless, shaking, wanting to cry.
What a horrible nightmare. I haven’t been able to forget it.
And then, a few weeks later, I saw an article about how difficult it is to get out of a sinking car. How painful it is to wait for the water to equalize both outside and inside the car.
There goes that plan.
The article, though, did go on to say that you should have a hammer in your car that is designed to break the car window - in situations just like the one in my dream.
So, I’m going to post the link where you can buy one of these little “gadgets.” A friend of mine (thanks, Kim) found them on Amazon. I am buying one for each of my cars.

I don’t know why I had this dream – or why I feel the need to post this information for all of you. I pray none of us ever need this hammer.

But, if we do, I bet we will be VERY happy we planned ahead!

Here’s the link to the hammer.  This one comes with a mounting bracket.

They also sell a two-pack which is a little cheaper.

If you don't want the mountin bracket, this option may be better for you.

All of these hammers also come with recessed seatbelt cutters.

If My Brothers Were Never Born

Aug 16, 2010

Doesn’t it always seem my stories about my kids take place in the car? I truly think we spend three quarters of our life in there.

Today’s tale is no different.

Tonight, I was driving my daughter, Jordan, to her friend’s house for a sleepover. On the way there, and out of the blue, Jordan said to me, “Mommy, it’s a good thing Daddy didn’t die in Iraq.”

Uhm. Yeah. That’s an understatement.

“Because,” she continued, “ if Daddy died, we wouldn’t have Bennett or Maclain, either.”

She had a good point there. Both of her brothers were born after her Daddy came home.

As we drove, I thought about how insightful and sensitive her thoughts were. Those days of her father being gone were not forgotten by her. And, apparently, she loved her brothers so much, she couldn’t bear the thought that they might have never been born.

(That’s the sound of my bubble bursting.)

“But . . .” Jordan went on, “if they were never born, you’d still have an office because Bennett wouldn’t be sleeping in it. And, we’d have a guest room where our friends could sleep over . . . and, I’d be able to paint my room green . . .“

So much for not being able to bear the thought of not having her brothers.

It seems that decorating and rearranging the house is much more enticing to my seven-year-old daughter than those pesky little boys who follow her around all day long.

75% Off Some Over-Counter Meds at CVS

Aug 4, 2010

My daughter has sinus issues and so she often develops a bad cough.  As a result, I always need to have a stash of cough medications in our house.

I realized I was running low and headed out to CVS this morning to get some more.  When I got there, I found that many of their over-the-counter medications (CVS brand and name brands like Dimetapp and Triaminic) are on Clearance 75% off.

They weren't in the Clearance section.  They were in the regular medication aisle with 75% off tags.  I got many for about $1.47!

They had adult medications, too - cough, cold, runny snose, stuffy nose, etc.

Head over there if you need to stock up for your family!

GREAT Deal on Diapers

Aug 2, 2010

I am not a diaper "snob."  I will buy whatever is the cheapest per diaper.  The reason?  In my experience (with my 40 lb baby boy), every diaper WILL leak at night.  I have tried them all.  Overnights, Goodnights, Huggies, Pampers, Luvs, Costco brand, etc.

So, I buy whatever is cheapest.  At the moment, Babies R Us are winning that war at 27 cents per diaper for their store brand.

That's 2 cents less than Costco (my old favorite).

But, my friend, Sandy, email me this great deal the other day and so I'm sharing it with you.

Amazon has a "Subscribe and Save" program.  Without getting into too much detail, you sign up (for free) to have certain products mailed to you on a regular (once a month, once every 3 months, etc) basis.

The deal they have now is that diapers are 30% off!  That brought their Luvs (their cheapest diaper), size 6 (their largest) down to 20 cents a diaper!

But, if you have the August issue of Parenting magazine, somewhere around page 40 is a pull-out orange coupon for 20% off a diaper order through Amazon (expires August 31).

Amazon will allow you to use the coupon IN ADDITION to their discount.

This got my diapers down to 16 cents each!

The bad news?

1.  I'm not sure how long their sale is going to last so jump on it now.

2.  When I typed in my coupon code, it only took off 10% for some reason.  I could have called Amazon to ask about it, but I happened to have another code a friend had emailed me (each magainze's code is unique) and so I added that one, too.  For some reason, it accepted both of them (yeah!) but each only took off 10%.  So, I got my 20% off, but had to use 2 codes.  If you have a problem with it not being 20% - and make sure you check - then call Amazon before you place the order or right after you place it.

3.  I also had a problem with Amazon saying I got the 30% off but then, when I hit submit, it didn't take it off. I had to call them for that and they had to manually fix it and refund my money.  Make sure you check that you don't get charged too much!

4.  They only allowed me to buy 3 boxes.  I probably would have bought ten!  I think I'm going to have my husband create an account so we can get a few more.

5.  You will have a subscription to their Subscribe and Save programs, BUT once your diapers ship, you can cancel it if you don't want it.
